NOTE: Race of the Month is no longer hosting contests. Stay tuned for further updates! -Alanna, December, 2010

Race of the Month Contests & Events

Welcome to DP’s information thread on Race of the Month! For 10 months out of the year, DP chooses one of Azeroth’s races to focus on and holds two contests to celebrate. We hold these contests in order to foster roleplay, creative writing, and community spirit among roleplayers in World of Warcraft, and to help build and grow our online community here at Dramatis Personae.

Here you will find all of the details you need to know about the Writing Contest and Roleplay Contest, as well as how all members can participate in Race of the Month, even if they don't care to compete.

Information for All Members

You don't have to enter the contests to enjoy Race of the Month! Now is a good time to make a new character, or resurrect an old one, on one of the official contest servers and make some new friends who could be with you all the way to level 70. Or, just sit back and enjoy the various posts that the entrants make, and vote for a character who particularly strikes your fancy. Member votes are hugely influential in both contests, so let your voice be heard and you could help some lucky person get 2 months' free WoW time!

Races of the Months
(servers to be announced each month)
    JANUARY - Tauren
    FEBRUARY - Night Elf
    MARCH - Trolls

    NOVEMBER (break)
    DECEMBER - Dwarf

Fine print:

You must be registered as a player with Dramatis Personae in order to be eligible to win a 60-Day Time Card (in other words, you must be registered under your name/alias, not your character's). Your history with DP (or lack thereof) is NOT a factor in scoring - everyone starts fresh each month. Players of any age may participate in the contest, but you must be 18 years of age or older to win a WoW time card. Prizes expire if not claimed within 30 days (by notifying Mishell of the winner's address). In order to be eligible, your character must exist on a roleplay or PvP-RP server and must be entered on the Call Sheet. In order to be eligible for the Roleplay award, your character must exist on the appropriate server(s) and must be entered on the Call Sheet. Race-of-the-Month Committee members' characters are not eligible, nor may Race-of-the-Month Committee members nominate or vote on characters. Producers not on the Committee may nominate characters but may not vote.

Writing Contest

This contest involves writing about a specific character of the current month’s race. Each author will be judged by three volunteer judges on the quantity (number of posts - limit one per day) and quality (entertainment value) of your writing. In addition, all DP members will have the chance to vote for your character as their favorite. All "favorite character" votes will count toward your final score, as we will consider them a testament to your ability to win over an audience with your writing.

How to Enter:

1. Sign up with DP.
If you have not already done so, sign up as a DP member by registering on our forums using an ooc username that is NOT the same as ANY of your active WoW characters. While you're here, introduce yourself in our introduction thread and check out some existing journals and stories to see what your competition is like. :)

2. Sign up for the contest.
To enter, you must have a character of the appropriate race currently active on any roleplay server. Characters on non-RP servers are ineligible. We strongly suggest you enter only one character, as this is essentially a contest between characters, and you don't want to compete against yourself! To sign up, enter your competing character into our Call Sheet by the 20th of the month. At minimum, you must enter the character's name as it appears in-game, and the RP or RP-PvP server that the character plays on. However, adding more detail such as a picture or description may generate more interest in (and more votes for!) your character.

3. (Optional) Make a character account.
You don't have to do this, but it's more fun sometimes to see a picture of your character next to your posts, and/or a special signature underneath. If you would like to make a separate account for your character, you only need log out of your player account, choose "Register," fill in your character's name, and use the same email address you used for your player account (that lets the database know it's a character). For "location," character accounts often use their server, and for "occupation" they often use class. But feel free to experiment.

4. (Also optional) Enter a brief biography of your character the Character Introductions thread.
This thread is located in the "Events & Pacers" Forum. Posting some information about your character gives even the busiest of our members a heads-up that there’s some good writing to be read! You can even include a direct link to your journal or story thread. (Contact any Producer if you need information on how to do this.)

5. Share your writing.
Post your writing samples in the appropriate forum (Journals or Storytelling) by the 25th of the month. You may post as many pieces as you like but you will only get credit for one post per day. First-person journals, letters, or tales written/told by your character go in the Journals & Letters section. Third-person stories written by you about your character go in the Storytelling section. (If you're not clear on the distinction, try browsing these sections to see examples.) The reason for the separate sections is so we can separate your skill as a writer from your character's skill (or lack thereof) in expressing him/herself. An orc peon's journal, for example, would be riddled with bad grammar, and that shouldn't count against you. ;)

Tips for Winning:

**Know your game lore.**
It's your character... but it's Blizzard's world! Because this is a writing contest, researching your setting is very important. We have all kinds of resources on the site to help you learn about the various races and about the world of Azeroth, and you also have access to the amazing WoWWiki, so if you stray too far from WoW canon, it may count against you! If you have any questions about what is and isn't possible in Azeroth, feel free to ask in our forums or PM one of the DP Producers.

**Enter early.**
The judges will be pretty cranky if they have to read 1,641,626 entries on the 25th. Do you want a cranky judge reading your entry? Also, entering early gives you a chance to gauge people's reaction to your piece, make adjustments, and post again! Last but not least, the longer your pieces are up on the site, the more people will read them and vote for you!

**Enter often.**
We recommend that you break longer stories up into small, cliff-hanging pieces and post one each day rather than posting the whole thing in one shot. There are three reasons for this. 1) It keeps your name in front of your audience on a regular basis so they don't forget you. 2) Shorter pieces are more likely to get read by busy members and earn you votes. 3) Because of the way the judging process works, you'll get more credit for 3 1,000-word pieces than you would for a single 3,000-word piece. We reward you for catering to our short attention spans!! However, posting 1,000 3-word stories will not help you, and may result in your being Cursed by DP's warlocks.

**Check out (and support) your competition.**
What makes this contest unique is that you can read what your competitors are writing and try to one-up them by posting something new and better! If you see someone whose writing truly impresses you, feel free to mention them in the Character Introductions thread in the Events & Pacers forum, and vote for them when the time comes. Your team spirit will be noted when judging time comes around!

**Use the Call Sheet.**
Yes, this is a writing contest, but there's also a "member vote" element that comes into play, because we want everyone to feel included in the fun. So being visible matters! When you log on your competing character for some questing and roleplay, we recommend that you alert your fellow DP members to this fact by using the Call Sheet. People who have characters on your server may log on looking for you, and if they RP with you and like you, that may well influence their vote!

Roleplay Contest

This contest is all about the quality and quantity of roleplay that each contestant participates in with fellow DP members during the contest period. We restrict the contest activity to two servers each month to provide at least some element of choice without spreading out the roleplayers too much. The servers for each month are announced in a new post in this thread at the beginning of each month.

How to Enter:

1. Sign up with DP.
If you have not already done so, sign up as a DP member by registering on our forums using an ooc username that is NOT the same as ANY of your active WoW characters.

2. Sign up for the contest.
To enter, you must roll (or already have) a character of the appropriate race on either of the official contest servers. We strongly suggest you enter only one character, as this is essentially a contest between characters, and you don't want to compete against yourself! Enter your competing character into our Call Sheet by the 20th of the month. At minimum, you must enter the character's name as it appears in-game and which of the official contest servers the character plays on.

4. Post in the "Little Black Book" thread.
This thread is located in the "Events & Pacers" Forum. In it you should post a brief introduction to your character (this can take any form you choose), and leave space underneath to write down the names of the characters you roleplay with. If you do not have a character account, you can use your player account to post this. In order to win the Roleplay Contest, your character must have a post in this thread, though it does not matter if you use your player account or a character account.

5. Roleplay.
Watch the Call Sheet to see when your fellow DPers are online. When you go online, be sure to /join dramatis and /join personae so you can quickly locate other DP members. For info on those chat channels, please see the "News & Information" forum. Once you find other DP members, join them for IC questing or a few drinks or whatever you all prefer.

6. Write down each character you meet.
Write down the name of each DP character you roleplay with and add it to your "Little Black Book" post. For full details on this, see the "Black Book" thread.

Tips for Winning:

**Check out DP's Roleplay Standards.**
Because many of the people you'll be playing with have been with DP for months or even years, they may be accustomed to certain things. Using the etiquette and conventions that your fellow members are used to may cause you to make a better impression upon them. And here are a few bonus tips: OOC comments should be kept to /party or /whisper and are most often enclosed by (( and )) or < and >. Any description or action within a dialogue line is usually indicated between asterisks. (Example: What are you *coughs* talking about?) When possible, we try to avoid putting dialogue in /emote lines, as many people rely on chat bubbles to help them follow conversation. Hope that helps!

**Don't be shy.**
Don't wait for people to come to you. Speak up in dramatis chat and ask where people are, then go to them, if levels permit. If you are too low level to come to others, a polite "I'm only level 1 and can't go to Un'Goro - will someone come hang out with me in the newbie zone?" will usually get results. Remember that this contest is about making an impression on others with your roleplay. People tend to roleplay with those who make it easiest for them, so don't expect others to seek you out or even notice you're there unless you say something!

**Keep a journal.**
Keeping a journal of your character's adventures as he or she rises through the ranks is not only entertaining for the rest of us, but adds to your score in the contest! In addition, it generates interest in your character and makes more people want to seek you out for roleplay. Check out the Journals & Letters forum for many, many examples.

**Use the Call Sheet.**
When you log on your competing character for some questing and roleplay, alert your fellow DP members to this fact by using the Call Sheet. People who have characters on your server may log on looking for you, and that could mean a new entry in your "Little Black Book" or another vote in your favor.

Voting

The voting period is from the 21st to the 27th of each month. On the 21st, the Race of the Month committee will post a list of all the characters who are eligible for votes based on posts in the Little Black Book thread and entries in either Journals & Letters or Storytelling. The voting process is private - no one will know who voted for whom. Every DP Auditioner and Member is allowed one vote each month. Producers may not vote.

Votes should be sent by Private Message to our private vote collection account, which is named BallotBox. Please PM your vote to BallotBox by the 27th of the month. Just like in a real ballot box, a vote, once cast, cannot be changed. No one but the Race of the Month Committee will see who voted for whom, so feel free to vote for whomever you truly feel is the best. Votes will be added to the other points that each character has earned over the course of the month, and winners will be announced on the 28th!

Some Notes on Voting

We hope that each member will vote for a character each month. Your vote is your way of saying, "This month, this character seems to have demonstrated the best and most entertaining grasp of the WoW racial spirit." Please do not consider OOC factors such as length of DP membership, forum rank, ooc personal relationships, etc. when voting. Any votes that clearly violate this spirit (such as voting for your husband even though he hasn't logged on all month) will not be counted. May the best character win!
